The suns peeked through the canopy as the Drivish castle broke the horizon. The massive structure stood as tall as the trees. A large system of support beams with interweaving bridges held the castle above the ground. It was a mixture of massive stones and wood. Several large walkways allowed for access from the ground far below. A large archway ushered in the group as they passed into the city outside. Amarrisa clutched Lorthwyn closer as they passed a large wooden stable.

Three massive open stalls held large leather saddles. Next to them stood two stable hands. One elf woman let out a silent laugh as a large bat stole the Drivish melon a young boy held. He nearly dropped it as the bat chomped down. The bat was a foot taller than them both, easily a foot taller than Amarrisa or Lorthwyn. Its dark brown fur was well-taken care of and its massive wings almost shined. Amarrisa glanced at the others. Other than Lorthwyn’s quick eye, none seemed to notice. She stared at the Drivish riding bat as another glided down next to the stable hands. The boy quickly ran to help the rider dismount. Amarrisa tried to watch more, but they passed through the large stone gateway, the scene disappearing behind them.

The stone walkway slowly gave way to dirt as they moved into the town. Buildings of all shapes and sizes lined the road as they passed by. Some smelled of fresh bread, others of sweets. Amarrisa nearly stopped as a small child held out fine crafted jewelry over the counter of a booth. Lorthwyn was forced to cover his nose as the mixture of smells became too much, his heightened sense of smell making him a little woozy with all the new scents. They passed through the small town that outlined the base of the front of the castle. A massive twelve-foot wall crept up towards them as they approached the looming castle.

A few guards nodded as they passed through the opened gate of the castle’s outer wall. The ones who didn’t recognize the Princess and her Knight on sight didn’t move, taking the lead from their captains. The courtyard was lined with numerous training areas, brimming with unsavory-looking types.

The Princess looked over the bands of what looked to be sellswords—men and women who had gnarled-looking weapons and patchwork armor. Grins exposed poorly kept teeth. Her Knight somehow made himself look even bigger as they moved through the sea of prying eyes. Amarrisa dug her fingers into Lorthwyn as a chill ran up her spine. She felt many eyes piercing through her. Passing by the first few groups, they knew better than to think sellsword anymore. These were ‘Beastmen’, from the Unseen Desert, the large deadly, near unlivable desert that stretched past the north side of the Pallen Mountains and Drivitar.

Farryen leaned to Bell with a lowered voice. “I’ve not seen the king have mercenaries before. With this large a number, you figure he’s gearing up for war.”

Bell couldn’t answer as a skinny, orange-haired man sauntered up to the group.
